I could blame the freezing temperatures or the fact BeerSweden Trev was rather more off-putting than normal dressed as he was like a Middle Earth Orc throughout the filming of this episode but the fact is I got the date that the term porter stout was first introduced out by a hundred years or so (give or take a decade or two).
History it seems isn’t my strong point.
The first recorded mention of porter is as early as 1721 and stout porters (which later dropped the word porter and simply became known as stouts) were popular later the same century.
For an interesting (and quite in-depth) look at the differences (and similarities) between the porter and stout styles I recommend you check out Martyn Cornell’s excellent Zythophile blog. For a more bite-sized, takeaway version click here!
