Beer Sweden Exclusive – Mohawk Extra IPA


Just a few minutes ago a box with two bottles of Mohawk Extra IPA, the tongue-curling 127 IBU (!!!!) brainchild of Sigtuna Brygghus, Wicked Wine and Stefan Gustavsson arrived at BeerSweden HQ.

In yet another exclusive BeerSweden is the first blog to get it’s hands on a review bottle of this insane beer that will be released at the Systembolaget later this month. Check back a little later today to see my full review on what promises to be a very interesting drinking experience indeed.

Sigtuna does a BrewDog?


Well OK, not quite. But the front-running Swedish microbrewery is looking for 175 investors to put up 3,000 SEK each in order to help pay for expansion plans needed to meet a huge rise in demand for its beers.

I’ve only just written about Sigtuna Brygghus and it’s heavy metal brewer here. It seems they need to blast out rock music around the clock in order to fulfil all their orders and are therefore inviting beer lovers to invest a total of around 500,000 SEK towards improvements at the brewery and to help purchase new equipment.

Sigtuna Brygghus Vårweizen – Breaking Beer Rules


Now before we begin I have a confession to make. I’m not a great fan of wheat beer – never have been.

I can honestly say I’ve tried to like it. I’ve supped many of the generally accepted best examples from Germany and Belgium in an attempt to convince my palette that it’s as amazing as many of my beery friends say it is.

My personal issue with the style is simply that I struggle to find drinking pleasure with a beer whose predominant tastes are banana, band aid and bubblegum mixed up with coriander and cloves.

So with this beer skeleton now publicly out of the closet lets get on with the review of Sigtuna Brygghus’s latest release, its oh-so-cooly named Vårweizen.

For the non-Swedish speakers vår means spring and this beer is part of a clutch of new beers recently introduced into the Systembolaget as part of the theme ‘spring and spicy cuisine’.

Now you only need to take a look at the photo to the left to see that you’d have to be REALLY creative to call this a spring beer when there’s over a metre of snow outside and the thermometer is literally frozen under minus 10 degrees. It’s more the latter category that this very unusual wheat beer falls into.

Sigtuna itself describes Vårweizen as an aromatic wheat beer based upon a southern German style with a ‘modern touch’ – the touch being the highly unusual addition of American hops.

This would no doubt make most Germans spit out their sauerkraut in disgust, as Sigtuna have clearly broken the style rules here which say that yeast should be the star of wheat beers with hops playing a very small supporting role at best.

Just as well I’m not from the style police then, because those hops make this beer, turning it from a potentially rather flat example of a weizen into something far more different and interesting.

Vårweizen is an unpasteurised beer that pours a cloudy amber (remember to swirl the bottle a little to agitate the suspended yeast floating around in it, otherwise your first glass will be far clearer than your last).

On the nose the phenolic smell of banana is clearly there but it is more restrained than in most other examples I have tried. There’s some peach too and an undercurrent of spice which isn’t obviously cloves but more like freshly cracked black pepper corns.

In the mouth VårWeizen is crisp but has a ‘skinny’ mouthfeel that lacks the soft creaminess I’m looking for from the wheat. There’s a dash of malt sweetness followed by some uplifting citrus acidity and then come the hops, sweeping in to finish the job with a nip of bitterness.

With all these qualities and its moderate ABV I can see why this beer will pair well with spicy cuisine. As a stand alone drink however it didn’t quite do it for me, although it gets plenty of ‘cred’ for daring to be different.

New Beers Available from Today


The Systembolaget is making this particular Monday a little easier to get through with the release of 12 new beers going on sale from this morning.

The Swedish micros are particularly well represented this time round, with beers from Nynäshamn, Oppigårds. Sigtuna and Dugges hitting the shelves. Big brother brewery Spendrups is also there with it’s eye-catching and quirkily named Pistonhead Hot Roddin’ Lager.

Expect a review of all these beers over the coming days!

From the US comes Double Bastard Ale from Stone Brewing and Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale – both big, bold and critically acclaimed beers. The US invasion continues with a beer that “bites like a rattlesnake looking for a fight” – Hop Ottin’ IPA and an altogether tamer wheat ale from Good Islands Beer Company that feels a little out of season with the thermometer currently dipping below -20 degrees here in Umeå.

A pair of English style beers from Stensbogaard Bryghus in Denmark almost complete the new line-up; a dry IPA (India Pale Ale) and a coffee-tasting stout.

I said almost because Estrella Damm launches its non-alcoholic lager today. Now in fairness I haven’t tasted this one, only the ‘normal’ strength version. However if it’s a paler copy of that I warmly recommend you drink something (read ANYTHING) else instead.

The Best Swedish Beer Website of 2009?


Once upon a time when you wanted to learn about a beer or a brewery you’d go down to your local pub and ask the landlord. Now you can just go online.

The virtual bar these days is always open, with plenty of global beer brands to choose from served to you from countless websites.

Beer review sites such as Ratebeer and BeerAdvocate are your modern-day landlords, happy to provide you with some words of wisdom about which beers to try and blogs such as this one are places people can now come to for a bit of virtual bar-room chit-chat.

There are lots of breweries that understand that the Internet is where its customers now hang out. They’ve understood the importance of exciting, informative, engaging and stylishly designed websites. They’re already tweeters and enthusiastic social networkers, constantly mingling and exchanging email addresses over at community sites like Facebook and MySpace.

I’ve just come back from a virtual pub-crawl of some of the most popular Swedish breweries to see what they’re doing right now to attract their ‘virtual share of throat’ . What I discovered is giving me something of a real-life hangover.

With a few exceptions Swedish breweries seem to be stuck in the dark ages (that’s the 90s in ‘Internet time’) when it comes to their websites and online activity. You only have to compare them with craft brewers from the US – who discovered the power and reach of Twitter and other online communities years ago – to see what I mean.

Although the US leads the way in terms of Internet marketing of beer brands they are by no means alone. BrewDog, a whacky microbrewery from Scotland realised the importance of winning supporters for its extreme beers from the get-go and is a text-book example of how to harness the power of the Net. The brewery’s edgey website/blog/viral activity/online stunts have unquestionably been a major factor behind its explosive growth since it was founded just two years ago.

Clever craft breweries can punch well above their weight if they know how to leverage the internet. It’s never been more important to put your beer online and as bloggers and beer fans we need to do our part to encourage our favourite brewers to go cyber. Therefore here’s my list of the best Swedish brewery websites and most active online beer marketers of 2009:

BEST OVERALL WEBSITE

My current personal nomination is Åbro, which not only looks great but is packed with useful information about brewing and beer facts).

MOST ACTIVE ONLINE BREWERY

My current personal nomination is Sigtuna, whose Head Brewer keeps Facebook fans up-to-date with his choice of hard rock music while he’s mashing in. (They MUST do something about their website though!)

BEST USE OF NEW MEDIA

(this category recognises the use of the internet and other ‘new’ mediums such as mobile phone applications to reach the beer drinking public)

My current nomination is www.norrlandsguld.nu. This brand site is bulging with cool apps and clever ways to interact with the brand and other NG drinkers.

It would be great to get your feedback and personal nominations so we can recognise the efforts of the category winners and more importantly encourage the other breweries who may be virtually lagging behind to update to beer drinking version 2.009.

Send in the tanks


It’s hardly surprising. Two new brands announced this week and several more ‘in the pipeline’ plus lots of good reviews for their current crop of beers means it’s time for Sigtuna Bryggeri to expand once again.

Here’s 6.800 litres worth of new heavy metal capacity being squeezed into the brewery this morning for Head Brewer (and rocker) Mattias Hammenlind to play with.

Sigtuna announces second new beer this week!


It’s certainly the season of giving at Sigtuna Bryggeri as it announces the launch of another new beer just two days after releasing details of its upcoming ESB (Extra Sigtuna Bitter).

This time it’s Sigtuna East River Lager, a 5.2% ABV amber-coloured lager that Head Brewer Mattias Hammenlind promises will have a fresh, floral hoppy aroma and a toffee-like malt body.

The beer, which is due to be released in the Swedish Systembolaget in March next year, will be dry hopped with US Vanguard. Sigtuna recommends pairing it with traditional Swedish food as well as pizza.

As with their ESB label Sigtuna are featuring another famous bridge on the front of their East River Lager, this time the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

Restaurant owners who don’t want to wait until March can order bottles from Brill.

Sigtuna ESB (Extra Sigtuna Bitter) – a sneak preview


Swedish microbrewery Sigtuna has today revealed the label artwork for their forthcoming beer Sigtuna ESB (Extra Sigtuna Bitter), a 5.6% ABV beer that is being launched in Sweden sometime within the first quarter of 2010.

The label, which features a photograph of Tower Bridge in London as a nod to the beer style’s homeland, is described as ”a light bitter with malty tones and a pronounced bitter finish”. It is brewed using only British hops, with Challenger the most dominant variety. The brewery also claim it is the perfect partner to that most traditional of British meals – fish and chips.

5 Questions to: Sigtuna Brygghus

Under the flight path of planes landing at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport lies Sigtuna Brygghus, one of a new wave of microbreweries taking off in Sweden right now.

Brewmaster Mattias Hammenlind is the man who’s ‘heavy metal’ approach to brewing has helped create a new buzz around Sigtuna which has seen sales soar and a clutch of new brands launched at the monopoly stores.

”Good beer should be mashed in with AC/DC playing in your headphones”, says Mattias. BeerSweden couldn’t agree more, so we’re rocking out with the second in our ’5 Questions’ series to Metal Head Matt Hammenlind, Brewmaster at Sigtuna Brygghus.

BeerSweden: I’ve searched around the internet but couldn’t find much about your brewery’s history. Can you tell us how it all began and the people behind Sigtuna Brygghus?

Mattias: The story about Sigtuna Brygghus began in 2005 when a couple of beer enthusiasts/homebrewers/beer geeks got together and decided to start a brewery. For years the brewery was a hobby for them but in 2009 they decided to take it a step forward. I started working here as a Brewmaster in January 2009 and we have since then hired one more person full-time and tripled our production from 35000 litres to 100000 litres of beer. The brewery still relies on hard-working part owners that work several hours a week for free.

BeerSweden: What is your beer philosophy at Sigtuna Brygghus. Where do you get your brewing inspiration from?

Mattias: Great Britain for their brewing tradition and American microbreweries for their innovation and boldness.

BeerSweden: What would you say are the biggest changes in the Swedish micro-brewing scene over the past 5 years?

Mattias: The amount of breweries and the will to make ”out of style” beers.

BeerSweden: That’s the past. How do you see the future of beer in Sweden developing over the next few years?

Mattias: I think will see more microbreweries starting up in Sweden and I think people in general will appreciate ”craft beer” more and more. Hopefully in the future people will stop drinking fizzy yellow ”beer” that is more comparable to tap water than real beer.

BeerSweden: Finally congratulations on two new releases at the Systembolaget (Snowblind Strong Ale and Midvinternattens Mörker) in the past month. Have you got any new beers or plans in the pipeline you can tell us about?

Mattias: There´s always beer in the pipeline! We got three releases at the Systembolaget next year (so far…); two easter ales, Sigtuna Röd Påsk and Sigtuna Easter Ale. Then in February our weissbier, Sigtuna Vårweizen will be released. In January there will be a collaboration between me and the Brewmaster at another European brewery. We´re making what we think will be a really exciting beer. I´ll tell you more when we finished the details.
